I have infiltrating DC. I tested pos. for BRCA gene. I will be having bilateral mastectomy on thurs. with reconstruction. I was told I was a candidate for nipple sparing mastectomy & am considering this. Any thoughts or opinions?

My surgery was a success. The PS did such a good job. Nothing can prepare you to see your new breast/s and then they are numb and way too firm. I do believe this technique is the way to go for the most natural look. Scars are less disfiguring. Hope your journey foes well

I had a nipple/skin sparing mastectomy last August for IDC. Postoperatively, I had pain for several weeks. My PS wouldn't give me anymore pain pills. The implant goes behind your pectoris (chest wall muscle). Your muscle and skin have to stretch to accomodate the implant

If I'm right, your surgery is tomorrow and you probably have made a decision. I had a nipple-saving mastectomy last October, having been diagnosed with Stage 2A cancer. My pain was tolerable with good drugs for about 4-5 days, and after that I didn't have much pain at all. I have an expander in there now, and they inject saline into it every 4 weeks or so to stretch your skin to get it ready for the implant. This doesn't hurt and it's kind of interesting to watch your "new breast" grow. I'll be getting two perky new boobs this summer and can't wait.

By the way, I've had breast cancer with a mastetomy before -- 11 years ago. This is a new cancer on the other side, not a recurrence. The first time the tumor was close to my nipple so the nipple-saver wasn't an option. Even if you don't save it they make you one from a piece of your own skin, then they tattoo it along with a new areola around it. Looks pretty decent, too.

I am also BRCA and my surgeon advised me against nipple-sparing mastectomy because there is still some breast tissue in the nipple area - it contains milk ducts. It is best to remove as much breast tissue as possible especially being BRCA . Aldo
