Just diagnoised with DCIS, stage 0, grade 1. Had a lumpectomy with clean margins. Not sure about radiation treatment. Do I need it?

I was diagnosed dcis, stage 0, grade 2 and 3. Lumpectomy done and also had clear margins. My doctors have recommended radiation, and I began treatments last week. I also began taking Tamoxifen. I wish you well in your decision. my thought was fight it now, and hopefully I will never have to deal with this again.

Did your Dr recommend you taking the Tamoxifen or was it something you thought would help down the road?

I opted not to take Tamoxifen-I haven't felt well since Radiation ended almost 5 months ago. I really feel overtreated Lumpectomy, Lymph Node dissection and 33 Radiation Treatments. Queen B of Early Detection

Your doctor would have the best call on that. I know with mine before we knew if there was Lymph Node involvement, he said if there was any node involvement that they AUTOMATICALLY suggest radiation. I think radiation was the easiest part of my treatment. Yeah it was tiring having to go to the clinic EVERY DAY, but it was nothing compared to getting chemo once every 3 weeks.

That's a question for your doctor. You should get your doctor's opinion. My mom had the same thing, though, about 5 years ago. I think she opted out of radiation, but again, you have to get some second opinions. I think they (doctors) do radiation after a lumpectomy because they want to make sure they got all the abnormal cells, so nothing has a chance to spread later.

Ask and get a second. Opinion. I was told it's insurance, but I did it. I've heard lately that maybe people don't need it after clean margins? Not sure it's confirmed...just medical articles. Best

I say better safe then sorry but do your research and discuss it with your doctor. You need to make the right decision for you. God bless.

My mother had the same diagnosis, and she had the radiation that is given twice a day for 4 - 5 days. Radiation seems to make a difference in reoccur acne from everything that I have read
