I was diagnosed with stage 2b HER2 positive breast cancer in October 2011. At the time I was 35 years old; still nursing my second child who was 15 months old (nursed my first until she was 13 months); I was in the best shape of my life and had completed my first10K a month before; and my diet had never been better, eating a lot of local, whole foods. What I thought could have been a blocked milk duct turned out to be invasive ductal carcinoma. My tumor, on the right side, was about 2 1/2-3 cm and it had spread into my nodes. Luckily, I found great and personal care and treatment at my local hospital. Even though I am an hour from Boston, I decided to stay close to home so I could continue to work and be with my two girls as much as possible. It was the best decision I could have made. I had 8 rounds of chemo -- 4 AC and then 4 Taxol/herceptin -- two surgeries (ultimately a single mastectomy) and 28 rounds of radiation. I just had my last herceptin treatment (a year total) on 1/25/13 and there isn't a trace of cancer left in my body. I had a complete pathological and clinical response and all three of my doctors are just thrilled with my progress, as am i!
It's a brutal battle, but I feel stronger and more resilient as a result. My outlook on life is forever changed!
