What kind of pain should I expect? I am having a right mastectomy with an expander on Wednesday. I have two little ones at home so I am wondering about recovery as well.

Thanks everyone. I am home and feeling great - so much better than I anticipated. I had nodes removed a month ago during breast conservation surgery which went great, but the extensive pathology revealed stage 0 DCIS so I had to go ahead with the mastectomy. At this point the pain isn't that bad. Thanks for all your responses!

I had right mastectomy w/expander in September - 3 kids ages 8-12. I was able to use Tylenol for pain relief and was back to work in one week. Everyone is different, if you can get help from family and friends get it so you can rest and recover.

Hi Erin. I haven't had surgery yet but will on the 30th. It isn't the same as yours. I just wanted to wish you the best. You take care, jayme

Erin, I had a bilateral mastectomy with expanders! You will need help with the children and the house cleaning as well as cooking! You definitely will need to take the pain meds! If you don't have a recliner you might want to think about one! The expanders are very uncomfortable trying to lay on! I wish you the best of luck on your Journey!

Erin, are you having a sentinel node biopsy, too, or have you already gone through that? The node removal is actually more painful than the matectomy in my situation, and restricted arm movement a lot more. I'm on week three of a double mastectomy with expanders today. I'm beginning to feel normal again to some degree. I CAN drive, but evasive and defensive movements are really uncomfortable, so I hung up my keys for awhile. My doc said 5 to 8 pounds restriction, and no straining ... "not even to poop!" Ha Ha.. Give yourself time, make you number one. It's hard to be selfish, especially I think as a mom, but you have to take care of you right now. My husband couldn't take off the whole time the first couple weeks. We had friends come in shifts - 3 per day - to help me with ME, and with the house. Accept all the help that's offered. God be with you!

Hi Erin. I had a right mastectomy with expander on April 6. The doctor prescribed pain meds and I took them! I had two drains as well, and it was several weeks before they were able to come out. I couldnt wait to get them out because they were becoming irritated where they went into my skin. My Dr. gave me several camisoles which had Velcro closures down the front, as well as 2 built-in pockets inside to hold the drains. I was told no lifting!...I could stir a kettle on the stove but no lifting it. You will need help!!! By about week 3, I was feeling much better. I started my first chemo treatment yesterday. I wish you all the best, Erin.

Erin, I had a bilateral mastectomy on 4/17. At this point I have not been released to drive or to pick up anything heavier than a fork. Plan ahead to have help available for grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning. You will not be able to lift up your children for a few weeks.
