Got results of 2nd biopsy, NON-cancerous papilloma. Surgeon advises lumpectomy of DCIS area and this papilloma followed by radiation. Can anyone share lumpectomy and radiation experience? How long was recovery? How much did your breast change? Any advise?

I had a lumpectomy on 5/15/17, with one sentinel node removed. I went back to work 2 weeks later. I did 16 radiation treatments which were no big deal. I had a slight sunburn under the breast and a very mild reddening on the surface, but that was the extent of it. The breast looks amazing, and the scar is barely visible. I don’t notice any difference in the shape or size. The only issue I’ve had is my armpit, as it is still numb, and I feel a pulling when I raise my arm. I’m going for an OT evaluation after Thanksgiving. I do, however, have good range of motion in the right arm and I don’t have any lymphema. The breast itself is sore, and I can’t sleep on my stomach or that side, but at my 6 month checkup last week the surgeon said that it’s still very early and it will get better. The worst part was the surgical bra I had to wear for 12 days after surgery! Good luck!! Keep in touch

I also had (2) lumpectomies, a week apart, in 2012 followed by 35 radiation treatments in 2012. The only side effect was a little tiredness and redness in the breast but that was it; however, it did affect the appearance of my breast. The radiation caused it to "pucker". It was no big deal and there are places that make bras that make you look amazing. And I worked every day of my radiation treatments. However, five years later, after a 3-D mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy, I've been informed that the cancer came back; is invasive this time and you can't have radiation twice in the same breast so a mastectomy will be necessary. I am waiting to hear from my surgeon to see what course of treatment I will follow.

Hi! I'm currently going through radiation after lumpectomy at the 9-10 o-clock area of my right breast. I'm having my 8th of 21 treatments tomorrow. My Onc DX score was low at 12 (thank goodness) so chemo was not needed. My surgeon removed a 1.8 cm tumor & took 10 aux lymph-nodes (underarm) all were clean but did find 1 intramammary lymph node next to the tumor (strange but a gift) that had micrometastases cells along with the tumor. I'm 8 weeks post op, still very uncomfortable with two 4 inch scars 2 inches from each other under my arm and at my upper breast quadrant. I'm dealing with onset of lymph-edema due to the lymph removal. I see no dimpling or in my breast but may once things settle down.. Everyone is different on healing and the area will take time. I'm 8 weeks post op and am very tender still. I do my exercises and hope to be lifting light weights by the beginning of the year.
So far radiation has been a piece of cake. A bit tired and sore at lumpectomy & lymph removal areas but know if that is the worst.... then I know I've got this! And you can too.
Radiation is painless and quick. I'm laying down for less then 4 minutes for the treatment daily. I feel so lucky that this is all i'm dealing with compared to some women. I would not have taken chemo treatment regardless of recommendation unless my stage was more advanced. Best of luck to you!

Merri - thanks for sharing! I didn’t realize that 6 months after the lumpectomy surgery you could still be sore. Sounds like you’re pleased with the results. I hope to be as fortunate- best of luck!

Kim - thanks for sharing your story! You’re right, if surgery and radiation is the worst of it then you’ve got this! I hope my surgery and radiation experience is similar to yours. Best to you and keep on goin’ on!

Sandra - I’m so sorry the cancer is back. I hope the news from your surgeon is good. You managed a lumpectomy and radiation before. I hope you’ll let us know and keep in touch.

I had lumpectomy & 35 radiation treatments in 2012. My lumpectomy did not effect my breast shape to much but everyone's cancer is different. My recovery was super easy but my margins weren't clear & I had to have a 2nd surgery 5 days after the 1st. Radiation started a month an 1/2 later because your incision has to heal before radiation can be done. The whole process took 5 months but I stayed out of work for a year. Some women go back to work shortly after surgery & work through radiation treatments. I had no radiation side effects other than a sun burn & that went away after treatments stopped.

I didn’t realize that radiation therapy wouldn’t start until after over a month after lumpectomy surgery. I assumed it would start around a week afterwards. It sounds like everything went pretty smoothly for you - I hope I will be as lucky!

I had lumpectomy....no change to the look of my breast. I also had intraoperative radiation which means radiation is done at the time of surgery. Recovery wasn't bad at all.
